26. Striking the Balance Between Rescuing and Enabling Our Kids, with Rick Brewer
Sometimes our kids mess up and need discipline. Other times they need grace. Chaplain Rick Brewer joins the show this week to talk about that all-important interplay between letting our children know we’re there for them by rescuing them when necessary, but not going so far as to enable behavior that needs correcting. Rick also talks about the biblical principle of “instructing as you go” and shares how he has done that in his own parenting. He ends the episode by imparting a profound question that can guide important decisions throughout our fatherhood journey. It’s wise to sit at the foot of a sage and soak up as much experience as possible. This conversation with Rick feels like doing just that.
Note: The scripture from Deuteronomy referenced by Rick in the early part of the episode is as follows:
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (The Shema) “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”
