73. Reconciling the Shadow Side of Legacy, with Dan Davis

In this final episode of our 3-part series on legacy, we're joined by Dan Davis, founder of Animate Mentoring, to discuss aspects of our lineage and character that we don't want to carry forward in our families and that we don't want to be part of our legacy moving forward. Dan explains that for all the good a person may exhibit, there's always a shadow side that must be dealt with as well. How can we break free from that shadow and turn it to light? If there are negative through-lines going back generations in our family, how can we say "this stops with me" and chart a different path for moving forward? Legacies are complicated, as we've discussed in previous episodes, and part of crafting a legacy that we can be proud of involves coming to terms with the less-glamorous shadow side of our nature. Dan's wisdom and insight from years of counseling men from all walks of life add important color to our conversation about legacy and will help you walk out the sometimes challenging task of leaving behind the harmful in pursuit of a meaningful, lasting legacy.

About Our Guest

Dan Davis is the founder and lead mentor at Animate Mentoring, which guides individuals and families so they can navigate life's transitions intentionally with wisdom and courage. After three decades of leading in the professional camping industry, Dan developed a keen sense of how important the relationship with a trusted mentor is. He saw firsthand how our modern society neglects mentoring through life’s most significant transitions, leaving many people lost and isolated. In 2020, Dan took a leap and launched Animate Mentoring so he and other team members can serve as guides through the stages of adolescence, parenthood, and mid-life passage, and provide direction and support so relationships can flourish as life changes over time.
